Yvonne Jenkins Memorial Award Presentation

18 Aug 2018

Denis Chamberlain OAM will be guest speaker at the award presentation at 2.00 pm on Saturday 18 August at the Lithgow & District Family History Society's Resource Centre, 43 Tank Street, Lithgow. Afternoon tea will be served afterwards.

Denis Chamberlain’s connection with things military possibly commenced during his time at Goulburn High School when he joined the army cadet corps. Denis was a member of the Citizens Military Forces in 1963 and a member of the Army Reserve from 1973 to 1980 serving with 17 Royal NSW Regiment as an NCO (Acting Sergeant). Denis has been an active member of the Bathurst RSL sub-branch for many years, a member of All Saints Cathedral Bell Tower committee and on the committee that compiled 1,926 names to be placed on the Bathurst War Memorial Carillon to commemorate the centenary of ANZAC.

A legatee from 2008 to 2017, he was awarded the Order of Australia ‘For service to veterans and their families, and to the community of Bathurst’.

In 2018 the National President of the RSL announced that Denis Chamberlain OAM was to be one of two recipients of the 2018 ANZAC of the Year Award ‘In recognition of his many years of dedicated and committed service to veterans and their families and to the broader community of Bathurst’.

Denis’ love of history has resulted in the publication of several books, including ‘The History of the Bathurst Contingents 1868-1987’.

Denis will be the guest speaker at the 2018 Yvonne Jenkins Memorial Award presentation on Saturday 18th August. The award will be presented to the winner of the annual essay competition, the title of which is ‘A Favourite Family Heirloom I have or would like to have’.

Denis has chosen ‘War Torn Gifts’ as the topic for his talk, no doubt drawing on his long association with servicemen and women.
